French onion babka / bialy babka with gouda cheese
Sweet babka is more common as the rich buttery bread dough carries it well, but savoury bread is always more interesting to me hence I decided to make my first babka, a savoury one.
It’s a babka, a rich butter dough with filling twisted in, a cooked caramelised onion, making it rather similar to a french onion soup if you add cheese inside. I grated some Gouda cheese inside and on top of the bread before baking.

    Awesome, that's a lot of effort by your mom! 2 broad questions ; 1. how is the rest of the unused sauce stored - and how long can they be stored for? 2. Would using store bought friend shallots help accelerate the process of mincing fresh shallots and the 10-15minutes of constant frying ? Thank you

    Thank you for the recipe. Made this today and it is delicious, super light and fluffy. I had an issue with removing it from the tin, as mine doesn't get separated into two parts, might have to try a different one next time. Great recipe!

      yes i do use the buttons. it's easier for me to purchase that than a whole block. but if you have access to either, they both work well too.

    I made these yesterday....it was super yummy. But my cookies is a bit more flat than yours and a bit oily. Not sure why....maybe I bake in a hot and humid climate. Next time I will cut down on butter.
